Exploring the American Wilderness and Other Adventures

Creative chaos, new places, wild beauty, and spontaneous adventures

Fault Lake, Sandpoint, Idaho

Less than two hours from Coeur d’Alene is one of my favorite hikes. Okay, I usually say they’re all my favorite hikes. However, facing mortality has me asking a lot of questions. And trying to find the answers. One of my staples while torturing my friends is to ask what their final meal would be. They know why I’m asking and love me enough to humor me. I still do not know what to choose as a final meal, but these questions have led me to consider other favorites. Like favorite hikes.

And right now, I choose Fault Lake as my favorite hike in our region of the Inland Northwest and Idaho Panhandle. It’s a 13-mile round-trip adventure to a glacier lake of incredible bright blue water in the Selkirk Mountains crest and Idaho Panhandle National Forest that has equally incredible views around you each step of the way.

Fault Lake is hike 52 in 100 Hikes in the Inland Northwest. Knowing how exceptional I think this trail is, I am surprised about the lack of description in the text; however, it does explain in detail how to also get to Hunt Lake, Hunt Peak, and McCormick Lake, which would make an excellent agenda for a backpacking trip to the lake.
